Social Work is Moving Ahead

There are several activities done by Indonesian Association of Social Work/Social Welfare Education and its school members

  1. National workshop Indonesian Association of Social Work/Social Welfare Education, 11-12 October 2012 at University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta, discussed: (1) the competency of postgraduate students of Social Work/Social Welfare Science; (2) Formulating and establishment of Learning Outline/Lesson Plan for Practicum 1 and Practicum 2 as Core Subjects of Social Work/Social Welfare education, and (3) Writing up teaching materials of Core Subjects in Social Work/Social Welfare.
  2. National workshop on finalization of Learning Outline/Lesson Plan for Practicum 1 and Practicum 2 as Core Subjects of Social Work/Social Welfare Education on 5 December 2012 at Padjadjaran University Bandung.
  3. Social Work Supervision training for Lecturers of Social Work/Social Welfare on 25-27 April 2013 at University of Islamic State Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
  4. Social Work National Conference “Urgency of Social Work Practice Law” organized by Bandung College of Social Welfare, 12-13 June 2013, at Mason Pine Hotel Kota Baru Parahyangan, Padalarang – West Bandung Municipality.
  5. Workshop on Piloting of Core Curriculum of Social Work/Social Welfare Education, 11-12 December 2013, at University of Bengkulu and University of Jember, and 18-19 December 2013 at STIKS Tamanlarea Makassar.
  6. Intensive Course on Social Policy and Development was held at University of Indonesia and organized by Postgraduate Program in Social Welfare, Universitas Indonesia in collaboration with University of Melbourne, Australia

Subject description:
This subject investigates the roles played by states, markets and communities in the developing world (with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region) in responding to key social policy issues such as poverty and welfare, unemployment, old age, health, disability, and the socio-economic position of women. The role of social policy in economic development is emphasised. Using a comparative approach, the subject examines how different countries attempt to instigate social policy-related change, e.g. policy formation and implementation and accountability, public sector and community leadership, economic-driven change (such as via micro-finance), the impact of international investment at local levels, the impact of international aid donors and NGOs.

Methods of delivery:

  • joint teaching (lecturers from Postgraduate Program in Social Welfare, Universitas Indonesia and University of Melbourne)
  • discussion,
  • visiting Humanitarian NGOs and Governmental Office

Time: One week (September/October)

Participants: Postgraduate students from University of Melbourne (approximately 15 students) and Postgraduate students from Department of Social Welfare - Universitas Indonesia (approximately 15 students)

International Conference on Social Work (ICSW)
THEME : “Strengthening the Development of Social Work in Indonesia”

q1On 22nd to 25th October 2013, Bandung College of Social Welfare (STKS) held International Conference on Strengthening the Development of Social Work in Indonesia in West Bandung. This conference is based on the fact that the existence of social work as a profession in Indonesia has entered a significant and strategic phases. The existence of Law No. 11/2009 on social welfare, the stipulation of Law No. 13/2011 on the poorest of the Poor, and Law No. 11/2012 on Child Judicial System show the growing recognition of social wokers profession in Indonesia. Nowadays, social work is expected to be “the leading profession” in the development of social welfare in Indonesia.

This conference was held as a forum where academicians from 5 countries: Japan, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, and Indonesia, along with academicians from 14 Colleges of Social Eelfare, 5 High Schools of social work, practicioners of social work and social service, members of Indonesian Association of Professional Social Worker, Indonesian Association of Social Work/Social Welfare Education, Consortium of Indonesian Social Work, and functional officials from the Ministry of Social Affairs were all involved in an important discussion on strengthening the development of social work in Indonesia.

q2Keynote speech was delivered by the Head of Education and Reserach Board, Dr. Ir. Harry Hikmat, M.Si. Resources persons from abroad were : Prof. Tatsuru Akimoto (Japan College of Social Work), Dr. Decha Sungkawan (Tammasat University- Thailand), Prof. Margarita Frederico (La Trobe University-Melbourne) and Dr. Azlinda Ashman (University Sains Malaysia). Prof. Akimoto is the Immediate Past President of APASWE, while Dr Sungkawan is the present Secretary of APASWE. There were also speakers from Indonesia : Dr. Soni A. Nulhaqim (Chairman of Indonesia Association of School of Social Work), Tata Sudrajat, M.Si (Chairman of Indonesia Association of Social Worker), Dr. Kanya Eka Santi, MSW (Chairwoman of Bandung College of Social Welfare).

Important issues on the development of social work profession are related to the existence of social work education that requires more intensive promotion; legislation on social work practice, accreditation on social welfare institution, sertification of professional social workers, and the strengthening of the role of social worker association. Solution for those issues is discussed by participants and resulted in the road map of the development of social work profession. It covers the development of social work education system, social work practice, association of social worker and the issuance of legislation that is relevant at a national and regional level.

This conference generates the following declaration:

  1. Strengthening commitment of all pillars to develop the system of social work in Indonesia that focuses on the system of education, practice, and association of social worker.
  2. Strengthening the contribution of Indonesia in developing social work at ASEAN and regional level.
  3. Promoting the implementation of social work system development in Indonesia until 2015.
  4. Stabilizing the implementation resulted from the action plan of social work system development
  5. Urging for passing the law draft on Social Work Practice in Indonesia.
  6. Enhancing the role of social work that is mandated by social legislation system.

The Conference participants considered that the implementation of declaration mentioned above as a breakthrough in strengthening development of social work in Indonesia.
