Asia and Pasific Association for Social Work Education

CHECK IT OUT! APASWE No.26

Dear all APASWE Members:

IASSW (International Association of Schools of Social Work) and IFSW (International Federation of Social Workers) are in the process of reviewing the present international definition of social work, and recently boards of both organizations developed the final version of the new International Definition of Social Work Profession for board consultation.

Attached please find the new International Definition of Social Work Profession proposal. IASSW have requested us our comments to send before 30 July 2013.
The content has changed much particularly in the following three points:
1. <The first line>
The title is now "International Definition of Social Work Profession." The current definition intended to define "social work" (title) and gives the definition of "social work profession" (body), or puts "social work" and "professional social work" in an equation.
2. <The last line>
A multi-layer model has been adopted. This definition must be amplified at national and regional definition, and their total makes the definition of social work profession.
3. <The body>
Many new words and phrases have been used such as "social development", "social cohesion", "collective responsibility", "respect for diversities", "social sciences, humanities", and "indigenous knowledge", and "to address life challenges".

Please take a look, have discussion with your colleagues, and send your comments to us,
if you have any. The APASWE will have a Definition workshop in Manila on 5th June. Mark Henrickson, Vice President of the APASWE and our Representative to the IASSW Definition Taskforce, is Coordinator, and will present this definition to the participants for discussion.

Sincerely,
Tatsuru AKIMOTO, DSW
President, APASWE
