NEWS: PROGRAM AND ACTIVITIES IN INDONESIA
News from the Indonesian Association of Schools of Social Work and Social Welfare (IPPSI)

On April 12th -14th 2016, the Indonesian Association of Schools of Social Work, IPPSI, held its 8th National Congress. Hosted by the Indonesia Christian University / Universitas Kristen Indonesia Maluku (UKIM) the event was attended by delegations from 33 schools of social work across the nation, members of IPPSI. The National Congress of IPPSI is Quadrennial event where members will elect a new president and the organization’s board members.  In the 2016 congress, Dr. Oman Sukmana of Malang Muhammadiyah University (UMM) was elected as the new presidents  for the period of  2016-2018, replacing the previous president Dr. Sony A Nulhakim of Padjajaran University.

Following the congress, a meeting was held in the State Islamic University, Yogyakarta on Mei 2016 where the new board developed IPPSI’s working plans. One of the important agendas planned during the meeting was renewing the national curriculum of social work, in accordance to the  new curriculum of Indonesian higher education , known  as  KKNI ( the competency-  based curriculum). This particular meeting also decided that Candradimuka Schools of Social and Political Studies ( STISIPOL),  Palembang will be hosting   the IX National Congress in 2018.

As planned, the meeting on curriculum took place in STKS Bandung on November, 2016,   focused on reformulating and standardizing the core competencies and learning outcomes for Social Sork graduate as components of  KKNI curriculum. It was also agreed in the meeting that the career prospects for a bachelor in Social Work are : 1).     Social Policy Analyst ; 2).   Community Social Worker; 3). Manager of Human Service Organization; 4). Psychosocial Counselor; and  5). Social Work Researcher.  The application of new curriculum, KKNI, urged IPPSI to re-formulate and standardize various aspect of the existing curriculum and many meetings are planned for 2017 to discuss further agendas on the issue.  
 
Programs of Bandung College of Social Welfare (BCSW)

-Bandung College of Social Welfare-

Bandung College of Social Welfare (BCSW)  is a higher education in social work established in 1964, under the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. BCSW have two social work programs, Bachelor Degree and Master Degree (Social Work Specialist). During 2016 and in the beginning of 2017, BCSW conducted several programs as follows;

Laboratories and Training  for the Enhancement of Student Competencies

- Universitas Indonesia-

Department of Social Welfare, Universitas Indonesia established an Integrated Laboratory for Development in October 2016,. The laboratory was officially opened by Rector of Universitas Indonesia and the Dean of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. In line with the national curriculum which must be on competence-basis, this laboratory is utilized by students to develop their competencies/skills. Having some equipment such as one-way mirror, LCD, computers, stage, etc, it  facilitates the students to be able to practise macro, mezzo and micro skills. This laboratory also offers counseling sevice for students.  

Beside the laboratory located on campus, the Department also established a Community Laboratory. Through this community engagement/services, the lecturers and students have opportunities to do research, practicuum and community development/empowerment. An integrated and multidisciplinary program delivers services for women, children, youths.

Every year the Undergraduate Program conducts  a social skill training for new students. This training aims to develop the student’s social skills, such as, self-awareness, assertiveness, team-work  building, relation and communication skills, etc. This program is held out of town and  organized by the lecturers
 
Empowering Communities

-University of Padjadjaran-

Students are connected with the community to assess the proposed community aspirations. Therefore, it prepares students to be agents of change that will bring changes in society. This activity can serve as a forum as well to support the empowerment of the community and scientific expertise in the fields of Social Welfare student profession as a social worker. This activity was conducted by the Social Welfare department of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Padjadjaran, in cooperation with HIMA (Students Association) of Social Welfare Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, as a real form of community service in order to realize the Tri Dharma college (Academic Education, Research, and Community Service). This event was held in the Genteng village.  Those activities focused on students’ dedication to the community and also as a place for socialization from the students to the community.

The implementation of ‘HIMA Goes to Country’ begins with the stage of assessment. This assessment is done for one full month and carried once a week for the purpose of collecting data, looking for problems and potential that exists in the Genteng Village. On the results of this assessment, we found that the village is a fertile area that makes this region famous for agriculture and plantation potential. Culture of mutual help in this village is still well established, it is seen from the activities of repairing drains, repairing damaged roads and help repair damaged homes. However, we also found that many people throw garbage anywhere and lots of garbage strewn everywhere, both in the village street, waterway or highway. Unwillingness of landfills and insufficient availabe trash bins are key factor that make situation worse. From the results of this assessment, finally we came to a plan and interventions to overcome it. We make plans how to sensitize the public to not throw garbage anywhere and process waste to be useful.

The action to Genteng Village was held for three days and two nights. Participants were divided into two hamlets, for every hamlet there are two groups. In this activity, the participants stayed at home for the community to socialize and get closer to local people. Thereafter, Forum Group Discussion had been held between citizens and participants. Students at the Forum Group Discussion are acted as facilitators to provide sufficient knowledge to citizens. For further, we held Seminar and Training on the behavior of throwing garbage anywhere and how to process waste to be useful and also beneficial. This training and seminar brought in speakers from the community of my Darling (Society environmentally conscious). We also did voluntary work with residents to clean up the garbage that littered the road. On the third day, the activities carried out are "Pagi Ceria" with residents.  

The “Pagi Ceria” consists of morning gymnastics and mini games, followed by students and residents. This activity was carried out other than as a form of devotion to the community, is also as participation building for the society. From these activities, the community began to realize about littering and process waste to be more benefit. They processed organic waste from vegetable leftovers for the next utility as fertilizers. They also began to understand the importance of cleanliness. ‘HIMA Goes to Country’ will then continue for the following weeks. Participants act as facilitators will control the intervention program regularly until indicator success of the program is reached.
 
Pasundan International Social Work Seminar(PISWS) 2016

-University of Pasundan-

Social work is an academic discipline and profession-based practiced. As a universal discipline and profession, their practice depends on the uniqueness of the country where social work was developed. Since its uniqueness and universal, social work needs to be discussed in depth by experts in social work from a variety of backgrounds country. Discussion of thought should across border for the progress and development of social work practice.

For responding the needs, we held Pasundan International Social Work Seminar (PISWS-2016) at Pasundan University. The seminar held in August, 12-13, 2016 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. This first seminar takes the scale to an international level with a specific theme and supported and collaborated with Chonbuk National University Korea, University of Malaysia Sabah, University of Bengkulu, University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta, ASIANA Social Welfare Foundation and  ASIAN Social Work Journal.

“Pasundan International Social Work Seminar 2016” has theme of “Social Work Across Border”. This international seminar was organized by Pasundan University and supported by Chonbuk National University, University Malaysia Sabah, Muhammadiyah University Jakarta and Bengkulu University. It is a part of implementation of Pasundan University Vision in 2021 and intends to achieve international recognition in the academic community of the Sundanese and Islamic values.

The aim and purpose of this seminar is to discuss the universal and the uniqueness of discipline and practice of social work in each country which led to the development and advancement of social work across border perspective in addressing various social problems in the local community, national, regional and global context.

Categorising conference papers according to specific themes and content is a time consuming and difficult task. The program committee has accomplished an outstanding job: these papers have been arranged around the nine themes of Social Work with Immigrant, Refugees, and Asylum-Seeker, Social Work, Organization,  and Social Policies, Social Work in Health, Rural Social Work, Social Work Education and Training, Social work, Religion and Spirituality, Vulnerable Group and New Service Model, Other Theme Related to Social Work and those cutting across several issues. They include a number of good ideas, arguments and opinions, which have implications for policy, practice and research.  
 
CAPACITY BUILDING OF SOCIAL WORKERS WORKING WITH DRUG ABUSER

- Indonesian Association of Professional Social Workers

Currently, Indonesia has become the target of the circulation of Narcotics, Psychotropic, and other Addictive Substances (NAPZA) in the world, conducted by International distributors. Related to the condition, President Jokowi has set Indonesia in Emergency drug situation considering the prevalence of drug abuse in Indonesia is quite high, in 2015 reached 2.20 percent or more than 4 million people consisting of abusers try to use, regularly wear, And addicts. Therefore prevention and treatment of current drug abuse requires comprehensive efforts by involving multidisciplinary, multi sectoral and community participation ranging from continuous, consistent, repressive and rehabilitative preventive, repressive and rehabilitative efforts.

One of the strategic components in the handling of drugs is Addiction Social Worker that helps deal with people
with problems of victims of abuse of Narcotics, Psychotropic and other addictive substances (NAPZA). In order to realize the professional Addiction Social Workers and to improve the capacity of the Addiction Social Workers is through various education and training activities in the field of addiction, one of which is the training of Colombo Plan 1 curriculum facilitated by the Ministry of Social Affairs Directorate of Drug Rehabilitation in cooperation with Parahita Provider on 5-8 October 2016, held at Hotel Sahid Jaya Lippo Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java. The training was attended by approximately 210 participants of the Drug Addiction Social Workers from various Beneficiary Institutions (IPWL) throughout Indonesia.

The main objectives of this series of trainings are to provide up-to-date information on Substance Abuse Disorders (GPZ) and their treatment, as well as facilitate activities directly to develop the skills, confidence and competence of the Addiction Social Workers.

Curriculum 1 on the training material is Physiology and Pharmacology for Professionals in the Field of Addiction.

The learning method used is adult learning approaches (andragogy) emphasizes active participation and exploration of participants' experiences so as to make this training a positive, productive and engaging learning experience.

Through this training, it is expected that Addictive Social Workers will be able to increase the capacity of international standard therapy, foster professionalism attitude and expand the global therapeutic workforce to significantly reduce the health, social and economic problems associated with Substance Abuse Disorder (GPZ).
