ASIAN PERSPECTIVES FOR SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION
SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION: THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL (SJR 2021, 0.65 Q1 Social Sciences Miscellaneous; Scopus, 118/426, Q2 (Social Sciences)) invites contributions to the Special Issue themed ‘ASIAN PERSPECTIVES FOR SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION’
The Social Work Education Journal has a track record of welcoming and encouraging submissions from across the globe. In 2021, a special edition that thematically collected valuable contributions from African social work academics and practitioners was proposed and then approved. In order to broaden the lens of social work education research and knowledge, a special edition that focuses on Asian perspectives is proposed.
Notably, efforts have been made to examine the development of social work education in Asia. A Special Issue entitled Social Work Education in Asia: New Horizons was published in 2010, which is more than a decade ago, in Social Work Education: An International Journal. There has been a growing interest in analysing how social work education in Asian countries and regions, such as Nepal, Taiwan, Mongolia, Vietnam, India and Japan, has evolved and developed, and how their social work education enhances well-being, advances human development and advocates for social justice in the society.
This Special Issue aims to provide an updated discussion of social work education in the countries and regions covered in the 2010 Special Issue. There will also be room for new submissions from other Asian societies, such as Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, and Philippines, where the demand for social workers to meet their social needs and promotes social development is growing.
This special edition will provide a platform for Asian scholars to contribute native perspectives and case studies to the broader knowledge base of social work education in other parts of the world, whilst also encouraging the development of impactful indigenous knowledge. It welcomes submissions from across a broad range of social work education issues and topics in Asia. These may include:
Standards for social work education and training
- Pedagogical approaches, including both classroom and technology-enhanced learning
- Application of artificial intelligence (AI) in social work education
- Online versus campus-based provision of social work education
- Principles of social work
- Values and ethics of social work
- Challenges and opportunities of (emerging) professionalisation of social work
- Indigenisation of social work theories and intervention approaches
- Analysis of the contribution of non-Indigenous knowledge to social work education and practice
- Social work practice learning and teaching
- Field education challenges and new models for placement provision
- Politics and social work
- Social work education in the post COVID-19 era

Submission Guidelines
- Interested authors should submit a 200-word abstract, a list of authors and affiliations, and a short biography for each author (no more than 100 words). This information should be submitted to Prof. Wing Hong Chui (wing-hong.chui@polyu.edu.hk) by 31 October, 2022. The guest editors will review all submitted abstracts and invite potential authors to submit their manuscripts to the special issue for publication consideration.
- Authors should submit their manuscripts to the guest editor via the Submission Site of the Journal for peer review indicating that the submission is for the Special Issue. The submission deadline is 31 August 2023.
- All submitted manuscripts should reflect research and scholarship that has been conducted in an ethical manner, and will undergo masked peer review.
